How to wash artwork with Paraprint OL60 [VIDEO]

paraprint washing

Paraprint OL60 is a non-woven fabric with parallel fibres, the structure allows water to be drawn through capillary action in a single direction. When used in the method described in this demonstration, Paraprint can be utilised to wash oversized or sensitive works of art that cannot otherwise be washed safely (i.e. by immersion).

This method of washing has been utilised and recorded (as you can see on the video below) by conservator, Rita Udina, who describes the process;

'Capillarity enables water circulation through the paper support intended to clean while avoiding dripping or leaks over the surface. It enables an effective cleaning yet keeping unaltered the water sensitive technique (gouache, watercolour, pastel or other).'

Drawing purified water from a reservoir at the head of the set-up the Paraprint OL60 is positioned underneath the artwork, with a layer of Bondina as a cover over the wetted artwork to prevent evaporation. The Paraprint drapes beyond the bottom of the artwork allowing the contaminated water to drip into a waste tray. Rita also states agents can be used to assist the process,

'Water can be modified with chemical agents (such as deacidification reageants, for instance, or others).'
